1. Preguntar y decir la hora
- What time is it? / What's the time? — ¿Qué hora es?
- It's nine o'clock. — Son las nueve en punto.
- It's nine fifteen / nine twenty / nine forty-five. — y quince / y veinte / cuarenta y cinco.
- It's half past nine. — Son las nueve y media.
- It's a quarter past nine. — Las nueve y cuarto.
- It's a quarter to ten. — Las nueve y cuarenta y cinco (falta un cuarto para las diez).
- It's 7:30 a.m. / It's 8:00 p.m. — de la mañana / de la noche.
Siempre se usa It's (nunca ~~It is seven hours~~: no se dice 'hours'). A.m. viene del latín ante meridiem (antes del mediodía) y p.m. de post meridiem (después del mediodía). El mediodía es noon / twelve midday y la medianoche es midnight: The movie finishes at midnight.
2. Días, momentos del día y preposiciones
| Categoría | Vocabulario |
|---|---|
| Días | Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday |
| Fines y partes | the weekend (sábado-domingo) / weekdays (lunes a viernes); in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening; at night |
| Frecuencia | on Mondays, every day, twice a week, once a month |
Las preposiciones de tiempo siguen un embudo: at para horas y momentos exactos (at 7:00, at noon, at night), on para días (on Friday, on Monday morning), in para periodos largos (in July, in the morning, in 2026). Memoriza la excepción que más se confunde: se dice at night pero in the evening.
3. Reading: Renata's typical day
Renata is seventeen and she has a busy routine. On weekdays she gets up at five forty-five a.m. because she trains rowing in the morning. She has breakfast at six-thirty and leaves home at seven. Her classes start at a quarter past seven and finish at two o'clock in the afternoon. After lunch, Renata usually does homework in the evening and at night she reads for twenty minutes. On Saturdays, she never wakes up early: she sleeps until ten and meets her friends at the skatepark in the afternoon. On Sundays, her family goes to their grandmother's house at two.
