1. La estructura completa

There is / There are en tres formas
FormaSingular / incontablePlural
AfirmaciónThere is a mirror in the hall. (There's a...)There are four rooms in the house.
NegaciónThere isn't a garage. / There isn't any milk.There aren't any chairs. / There are no chairs.
PreguntaIs there a bathroom? Yes, there is. / No, there isn't.Are there any windows? Yes, there are. / No, there aren't.

There aquí no significa 'allí': es una partícula existencial fija, equivalente a 'hay'. Como en el verbo To Be, la inversión convierte la afirmación en pregunta: There is a problem → Is there a problem?

4. Reading: the apartment for the school play

The drama club is looking for a stage apartment. This is the description they receive.

The apartment isn't big, but there is everything you need. There is a small living room with an old sofa and a lamp; there are some posters of classic movies on the wall. Behind the living room there is a narrow kitchen: there isn't a stove, but there is a tiny fridge and there are a few boxes in the pantry. Upstairs there are two bedrooms: in the first one there is a wardrobe and a mirror; in the second one there are no windows, which is a problem for our play. There isn't any garden, but there is a lovely balcony in front of the kitchen where there are two chairs. Is there a garage? No, there isn't, but there is a bus stop next to the building.
