Model essay · "Should students use laptops in class?"
Read the whole model and label each move: THESIS, REASON, EVIDENCE, COUNTER, REFUTE, CONCLUDE.
Many classrooms now buzz with open laptops, and teachers are divided. While some see a gateway to information, I argue that schools should limit laptop use during lessons, because the distractions outweigh the benefits. The strongest reason is attention. Studies of large lecture classes have found that students who use laptops for anything other than notes perform worse on exams, and, remarkably, the students sitting near them perform worse too, pulled away by a neighbour's screen. A second reason is depth: typing tempt students to jot everything and process nothing, whereas handwriting forces a summary that actually builds memory. Some people claim that banning laptops is unrealistic in a digital world, and that students with disabilities depend on their devices. This point deserves respect, yet it confuses two different things. Providing laptops for those who genuinely need them is not the same as leaving every screen open by default. Therefore, the sensible policy is a limited, well-managed use rather than an open one. In conclusion, although technology has its place, the evidence on attention and learning suggests that classrooms will be fairer and sharper when laptops are a tool we choose, not a habit we tolerate.
Detrás del modelo
- THESIS (párrafo 1): "I argue that schools should limit laptop use… because…". Anuncia postura Y razones.
- REASON 1 + EVIDENCE: atención → "studies… have found…". REASON 2: profundidad → memoria.
- COUNTER: "Some people claim that banning… is unrealistic…" (objetos reales, no una muñeca de paja).
- REFUTE: "yet it confuses two different things" + distinción necesidad vs hábito.
- CONCLUDE: reafirma con other words y cierra con idea propia ("a tool we choose, not a habit we tolerate").
Convierte "I think" en voz académica
- Evita el "I think… I think…" repetido. Alterna: "this essay argues", "it can be claimed", "the evidence suggests", "on balance".
- La HEDGING (prudencia) sube tu nivel académico: "may", "tend to", "appears to", "in most cases" — evita afirmaciones absolutas que el lector pueda derribar.

Practice — Advanced
