Short stories: character, setting and conflict

What is a short story?

A brief fictional narrative (usually 1,000-7,500 words) that focuses on one main character, one central conflict, and one effect or revelation at the end.

Character

The person (or being) the story is about. Good stories reveal character through: what they say, what they do, what they want, how others react to them. Character is shown, not told.

A dynamic character is one who...

Setting

Where and when the story happens: physical place, time period, social environment. Setting creates mood: a dark forest creates different feelings than a sunny beach.

The of a story is where and when it takes place.

Conflict

The problem the protagonist faces. Types: character vs. character, character vs. self, character vs. nature, character vs. society, character vs. technology. Without conflict, there is no story.

Plot: the sequence of events

Exposition (intro) → Rising action (conflict builds) → Climax (turning point) → Falling action → Resolution (outcome). This structure is called Freytags Pyramid.

Theme

The big idea underneath the story: what it says about life, love, courage, justice. Theme is never stated directly — you infer it from the characters journey and the outcome.

Writing your own short story

Start with: one character + one thing they want + one thing stopping them + one setting. Write the first draft in 20 minutes. Dont edit yet — just tell the story.

SEP · MX-SEC-G3-ING-C03-P01 · write scripts in English about conflict situations resolved through assertive and intercultural communication

A SCRIPT (guion) is a text written to be performed. Its basic elements are: CHARACTERS, SETTING, and DIALOGUE. Unlike a story, a script shows the conflict only through what people SAY and DO on stage, using short stage directions in brackets, for example [Ana crosses the room, annoyed]. To write a script about a conflict, you need a problem between characters (a misunderstanding, an unfair rule, a clash of cultures), a TURNING POINT, and a RESOLUTION. In this project the resolution must come from ASSERTIVE communication: a character clearly says how they feel without insulting and listens to the other side.

Assertive and INTERCULTURAL communication in English follows a simple pattern: "I feel… when you… because… I would like…" It names the emotion, describes the behaviour without labelling the person, and asks for a realistic change. When the conflict has a cultural dimension (a student mocked for their accent, food or clothes), the characters should ASK questions and EXPLAIN traditions instead of arguing who is right. A good script does not make the "bad" character a villain; it lets the audience understand both points of view and see how dialogue solves what violence could not.

El PDA pide ELABORAR guiones en inglés que aborden situaciones de conflicto resueltas mediante la comunicación asertiva e intercultural. El guion es texto dramatico: personajes, acotaciones y parlamentos listos para actuar.

PRODUCT (scripts in English: conflict resolved through assertive, intercultural communication): write TWO short scripts (scene dialogues) in English, 1-2 pages each, where a conflict is resolved through ASSERTIVE and INTERCULTURAL communication. Possible conflicts: a misunderstanding between a local student and a student from another country; a disrespectful joke answered with firm, calm explanation; two groups arguing over the use of a shared space. Each script must include: (1) characters and setting in a stage note; (2) dialogue where someone states their need assertively (I feel... when... I need...); (3) someone acknowledging the other culture or perspective before solving; (4) a resolution that is negotiation, not one side winning; (5) stage directions in parentheses. Mark which lines show assertiveness and intercultural understanding. Submit both scripts.

Asertivo no es agresivo ni sumiso: digo lo que necesito sin humillar. El conflicto debe resolverse HABLANDO; si se resuelve a golpes o porque uno cede todo, no cumple el PDA.

Table read: another group reads your script aloud once. Then they give feedback in English: Did the assertive line sound natural? Did the resolution feel earned or too fast? Record their comments and rewrite ONE line of your script based on it.

SEP · MX-SEC-G3-ING-C08-P01 · write short texts in English to present a situation or topic of interest, using narrative and poetic resources

A SHORT TEXT that presents a topic of interest (a personal story, a community issue, a place) works best when it combines NARRATIVE and POETIC resources. Narrative elements organise the message: a clear ORDER of events (introduction, development, ending), a POV ("I" for a personal story) and CONNECTORS (first, then, suddenly, finally) that guide the reader. Poetic elements add colour: sensory details ("the market smelled of cinnamon"), dialogue ("she said: 'come with me'") and a figure of speech that makes one idea memorable.

Before writing, ask three questions: WHO is my reader? WHAT is my main message? HOW do I want them to feel? Then plan: a title that invites, an opening that hooks (a question or a strong image), a short middle with one example or anecdote, and a closing that returns to the message. Keep it SHORT (80-150 words) but not empty. Finally edit your English: check the tense (past for a finished story, present for a general truth), the agreement, and read it aloud to catch what sounds unnatural.

El PDA pide CREAR textos breves en inglés para exponer una situación o tema de interes, con recursos narrativos, poeticos, visuales, etc. Mezcla de recursos es el punto: tu elijes la forma (relato, cronica, letra, comic con texto).

PRODUCT (short creative texts in English mixing narrative, poetic and visual resources): choose ONE situation or topic you care about (a school day that changed you, migration in your family, air and trees, street food culture, a person who inspires you). Create a SHORT multimedia-style piece in English (about 1 page or one slide/video) that EXPOSES it using at least THREE resource types: (1) NARRATIVE: a mini-story with scene (character, moment, change); (2) POETIC: one image, metaphor or short verse woven inside; (3) VISUAL: a photo/drawing/sketch or layout with design intention (color, framing, typography). Write a 30-word note in English explaining what each resource does for your message. Submit the piece and the note.

Exponer con recursos: no es pegar los tres tipos aparte, es integrarlos. La nota de 30 palabras prueba que cada recurso fue decisión tuya.
