Writing a persuasive message for a community issue
What is persuasive writing?
Writing designed to convince the reader to accept your view or take action. It states a position, supports it with reasons and evidence, and ends with a call to action.
Structure: the AIDA model
ATTENTION: start with a hook (question, fact, story). INTEREST: explain why it matters. DESIRE: give reasons to care. ACTION: tell them what to do.

| Part | Purpose | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Hook | Grab attention | Did you know 40% of our school waste is recyclable? |
| Position | State your view | We must start recycling at school. |
| Reason 1 | First argument | It reduces landfill waste. |
| Reason 2 | Second argument | It teaches environmental responsibility. |
| Call to action | What to do | Join the recycling club on Friday! |
What is a call to action?
Linking words for persuasion
First of all... Furthermore... In addition... However... Therefore... For these reasons... These words build logical momentum and connect arguments smoothly.
To introduce a counterargument, use the word .
Addressing counterarguments
Strong persuasion acknowledges the other side: Some say recycling is too hard. However, studies show it takes only 30 seconds more per day. This builds credibility.
Emotional and logical appeals
Ethos (credibility): Experts recommend... Logos (logic): Data shows... Pathos (emotion): Imagine your childrens future... Use all three in a persuasive text.

TO ACTION ("Let us…", "We can…"). Los MODALES expresan obligación y posibilidad: should (debería), must (debe), can (puede), have to (tiene que). Conectores como "therefore", "because" y "however" unen las ideas.

PRODUCT (argumentative writing in English): choose ONE community problem (trash, violence, water, exclusión, school dropout) and take a stand about a COLLECTIVE ACTION that could solve it (a neighborhood composting program, a student mediation brigade, a community garden...). Write an argumentative text in English (120-150 words) with: (1) a clear thesis: what collective action should be taken; (2) at least TWO reasons with evidence or examples; (3) one counterargument answered (Some people say... but...); (4) a call to action for the community. Use argument connectors (because, therefore, however, in addition, since). Attach your text.

Peer argument check: a classmate reads your text and writes in English: (1) Can they underline the thesis in one sentence? (2) Which reason convinced them most and which feels weak? Record here the feedback you received and how you will strengthen the weak reason.
