Inferring meaning from context
What is inference?
Inference = understanding something that is not directly stated. In reading: getting word meaning from context. In conversation: understanding what is implied, not just said.
Types of context clues

| Clue type | How it works | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Definition | The word is defined in the sentence | Photosynthesis is the process... |
| Synonym | A similar word appears nearby | The elated / happy child... |
| Antonym | An opposite word is used | Unlike his gregarious brother, he was shy. |
| Example | Examples follow the word | Beverages, such as juice and tea... |
| Inference | General context suggests meaning | After the storm, the debris covered the road. |
The docile puppy never bit or barked. What does docile mean?
Strategy: three questions
When you meet an unknown word: (1) Is it defined nearby? (2) What is the overall sentence about? (3) What kind of word is this (noun, verb, adjective)? These narrow the possibilities.
If a sentence says unlike X, X and the unknown word are .
Practice with real words
The arid desert made it hard for plants to grow. Arid = dry (because: desert, hard for plants). You inferred the meaning without a dictionary.
Beyond words: reading between the lines
In a story: She looked at the clock and grabbed her keys. We infer she is late. The text never says late — but you know. That is inference.

Toca una tarjeta para ver la respuesta.
Inference vocabulary:
Find these words.
Toca la primera letra y luego la última de cada palabra (en línea recta) para marcarla.
