Writing a short personal narrative

What is a personal narrative?
A true story from your life, written with a beginning, middle and end. Not a list of everything you did, but one specific moment with emotional significance.
Narrative structure
1) SETTING: when, where, who. 2) BUILD-UP: what happened first, then... 3) CLIMAX: the turning point. 4) RESOLUTION: what happened at the end. 5) REFLECTION: what it meant.
| Part | Question | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Setting | When and where? | Last summer, in my grandmothers village. |
| Build-up | What happened first? | We arrived and I felt bored. |
| Climax | Turning point | She showed me how to make bread. |
| Resolution | What happened? | I made bread for the first time. |
| Reflection | What did it mean? | I understood patience and love. |
Which tense dominates in a personal narrative?
Past simple: the narrative engine
Regular verbs: -ed (walked, talked). Irregular: learn them (went, saw, came, made). Use past simple for completed actions in sequence: I woke up. I got dressed. I went to school.
I (go) to the market yesterday.
Past continuous: the background
Use past continuous for ongoing actions or background: I was walking to school when I saw a dog. The -ing form creates atmosphere; the simple past interrupts it.
Linking words for sequence
First, then, next, after that, suddenly, finally, meanwhile, at that moment. These words guide your reader through the story in time order.

Sensory details
Good narratives use the five senses: what you saw, heard, smelled, felt, tasted. The kitchen smelled of warm bread and wood smoke. Sensory details make your story alive.
