Art, aesthetics and stories in English

What is an aesthetic resource?
An aesthetic resource is a special element that artists and writers use to create beauty and feeling: colour, rhythm, rhyme, metaphor or repetition. In English songs and poems, we often hear rhyme (cat-hat) and repetition ("I have a dream... I have a dream...").

Literature of Indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples
Some writers in English come from Indigenous and Afro-descendant communities. They write about their people, their history and their strength. For example, texts about the Civil Rights movement, and stories by Native American authors, show the value and culture of these peoples. Reading them helps us respect diversity.

Investigate and write an appreciation
For this project, investigate a literary text in English (a poem, a short story, a song lyric or a speech) written by or about Indigenous peoples or Afro-descendant peoples of Mexico or the world. Good places to start are poems by Native American writers, speeches of the Civil Rights movement, and stories or songs of afromexicano and African-diaspora communities. Take notes on the author, the people and the main idea.
| Text type | Example to search | Look for |
|---|---|---|
| Poem | A poem by a Native American writer | the land, ancestry and identity |
| Speech | A Civil Rights speech in English | justice, equality and dignity |
| Song or story | An afromexicano or Afro-diaspora story | traditions, resistance and pride |

PRODUCT (literary research dossier in English): find and read at least TWO literary texts in English (poem, short story, excerpt, song lyric, spoken-word) WRITTEN BY or ABOUT Indigenous and/or Afro-descendant peoples of Mexico or the world (for example: works by Joy Harjo, Langston Hughes, Derek Walcott, Benjamin Zephaniah; or bilingual authors from Mexico). For EACH text register in English: (1) title, author and people it comes from; (2) a short quotation (2-4 lines) that shows their culture or history; (3) what the text tells you that a textbook did not; (4) one theme the two texts share. Finish with a 40-word note: why does this literature matter? Attach your dossier.

PRODUCT (written appreciation in English): based on the literature you investigated (C08-P01) or on what you know about Indigenous and/or Afro-descendant peoples, WRITE AN APPRECIATION in English (100-130 words) about their social and cultural relevance. Your text must state: (1) TWO concrete contributions these peoples have given your country or the world (food, language, music, justice systems, ecology, rights, words borrowed into English like chocolate, canoe, mosquito); (2) why those contributions matter socially and culturally, not just historically; (3) a personal judgment: what deserves recognition or repair; (4) respectful language: peoples as protagonists, not as victims or folklore. Attach your written appreciation.
