Past tenses in context

Past simple: finished actions
Use it for completed events and for a sequence of actions. Regular verbs add -ed (walk becomes walked). Irregular verbs change form and must be learned in chunks (go-went, see-saw, have-had). Negative: didn't plus base (didn't go). Question: Did plus subject plus base (Did you go?).
| Base | Past | Example |
|---|---|---|
| go | went | I went home |
| see | saw | She saw a fox |
| have | had | We had fun |
| take | took | He took photos |
| run | ran | They ran fast |
Past continuous: the background
Form: was/were plus verb-ing. Use it for an action IN PROGRESS at a past moment, or as the scene behind a main event. 'I was walking to school when it started to rain.' The walking was happening (background); the rain interrupted it (main event).
Which sentence sets the BACKGROUND scene?
Combining them with when and while
RULE OF THUMB: after WHILE use the continuous (long action): 'While I was studying...'. After WHEN use the simple (short action): '...when the lights went out.' The long action was happening; the short one interrupted it.
Worked example
Sentence: 'While we (play) football, it (start) to rain.' Step 1: which is the long background action? playing, so use past continuous: were playing. Step 2: which is the short interruption? raining, so use past simple: started. Answer: 'While we WERE PLAYING football, it STARTED to rain.' Check: while takes the continuous, when takes the simple.
She (read) a book when the power (go) out.
Common errors
(1) 'Did went': after did, use the base form, 'Did you go?'. (2) Using continuous for finished sequences: not 'I was waking up, was eating, was leaving'; use past simple for a list of completed actions. (3) Mixing was/were: 'They WAS' should be 'They WERE'. (4) Forgetting irregulars and writing 'goed' or 'seed'.
Choose the correct question:
Why is 'I was waking up, was eating and was leaving' unnatural?
