The first conditional
We use it for a real or likely situation in the future: a condition and its probable result. Structure: IF + present simple, WILL + verb.
Two halves

- Condition clause (if): If you study tonight,
- Result clause (will): you will pass the test.
- You can swap them: You will pass if you study tonight (no comma before if).
Worked example
- Situation: maybe it rains; then we cancel the match.
- Condition: If it rains,
- Result: we will cancel the match.
- Full: If it rains, we will cancel the match.
Practice with feedback
If she ___ early, she will catch the bus.
You will be tired if you ___ sleep.
If + present simple can talk about the future.
Common errors
- If I will go (wrong): if I go.
- Forgetting the comma when if comes first.
- Using the wrong verb in the result: if it rains, we stayed (mix of times).
Why this matters
Negotiating, warning, planning a trip or a project: the first conditional turns ideas into real plans and consequences.
