Separable o inseparable: la duda eterna

  • SEPARABLE: puedes meter el objeto en medio. "Turn the lights ON" = "Turn ON the lights." PERO con pronombre, SIEMPRE va en medio: "Turn IT on" (nunca ~~turn on it~~).
  • INSEPARABLE: el objeto va detrás de la partícula: "I came ACROSS an old photo" (no "came an old photo across").
  • Truco auditivo: si suena raro separarlo, suele ser inseparable. Los de pantalla (turn on, plug in, back up) son separables.

Collocations: palabras que van en manada

  • Los nativos no combinan cualquier cosa: dicen "make a call", "send a message", "post a comment", "go viral", "browse the web".
  • COLLOCATION = pareja habitual. Decir "do a photo" suena mal: es "TAKE a photo". Aprender de dos en dos te da fluidez gratuita.

Reading · "A day ruled by screens"

Underline every phrasal verb and note what the partícula adds:

My alarm goes off at seven and before my eyes are fully open I have already logged into three apps. I scroll through the night's messages, reply to the ones that can't wait, and then my laptop freezes — it broke down again last week and I still haven't had it fixed. While I wait for it to start up, I plug in my phone to top up the battery. By the afternoon I have backed up my project twice, because a friend of mine lost everything when his cloud sync cut out. Later, a video I posted starts to go viral, and I sit laughing as strangers sign up to my channel just to argue in the comments. Some days I wish screens would just switch off.

Detrás del texto

  • "goes off" (suena), "logged into", "scroll through", "broke down", "start up", "plug in", "top up", "backed up", "cut out", "go viral", "sign up", "switch off".
  • Cada partícula pinta un matiz: TOP UP (rellenar), CUT OUT (interrumpirse), BACK UP (proteger).
  • "had it fixed" = causativo HAVE + objeto + participio (lo arregló alguien más).
