1. Can-do statements
- State a general truth: If you heat water to 100 degrees, it boils.
- State a school rule: Students get a warning if they arrive late three times.
- Warn about a real possibility: If we miss the bus, we won’t make the opening.
- Weaken a prediction: If it rains, we might move the visit inside.
- Give an instruction: If the alarm sounds, leave the room quietly.
|---|---|---|
| If you mix these two, the solution turns pink. | ley general | dos presentes |
| If the power fails, the freezer keeps cold for four hours. | ley del equipo | dos presentes |
| If a student touches the burner, the teacher stops the class. | regla del plantel | dos presentes |
| If the group pays before Friday, the bus holds the price. | caso posible | presente más resultado |
| If it rains on Saturday, we’ll move the outdoor visit. | caso posible | presente más will |
| If we miss the turn, we might skip the museum. | caso probable | presente más might |
| If the list is ready, send it to the office. | instrucción | presente más imperativo |
3. La forma de las dos condicionales
la zero conditional habla de lo que siempre se cumple:ley general, regla del plantel, química básica. zero conditional es if más presente, y resultado en presente, sin will en ninguna mitad. la first conditional es un caso particular del futuro: si esto ocurre, aquello ocurrirá. en la first, el will vive sólo en la resultado; la cláusula con if lleva presente. el orden no cambia el significado: if primero lleva coma, resultado primero no lleva coma.
| Tipo | Cláusula con if | Resultado | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zero | present simple | present simple | If you press this, the lamp turns on. |
| First | present simple | will plus infinitive | If you press this, the machine will start. |
| First con might | present simple | might plus infinitive | If we hurry, we might catch it. |
| First con imperativo | present simple | imperative | If it rings, leave the room. |
| Unless | present simple | cualquiera | Unless you sign, the office won’t accept it. |
| Orden | Signo | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| If primero | coma obligatoria | If it rains, we’ll stay inside. |
| Resultado primero | sin coma | We’ll stay inside if it rains. |
| Dos condiciones | coma entre las dos | If you finish early and you check the list, send it. |
Which sentence is a zero conditional?
Choose the correct first conditional.
“We’ll stay inside if it rains” has no comma because
“If the bus will leave at seven, we’ll run” is correct.
Both halves of a zero conditional use the present simple.
Complete the rule: If a student late three times, the office calls the parents.
One word: We’ll text you if the driver us at the gate.
4. Unless, probabilidad y el imperativo
unless significa if not y no admite una segunda negación en la misma cláusula. en la first también caben may, might, should y could: cambian la probabilidad, no la forma. elegir will, might o imperativo es decir qué tan seguro estás del resultado. la condicional con imperativo da una instrucción: if you finish, tell me. los marcadores de tiempo y el contexto deciden si es ley general o caso único.
| Nivel | Forma | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| Casi cierto | will | If we leave now, we’ll make it. |
| Posible | might or could | If we leave now, we might beat the traffic. |
| Consejo | should or can | If you feel sick, you should tell the teacher. |
| Instrucción | imperative | If the alarm sounds, leave the room. |
| Frase | Significado |
|---|---|
| Unless you sign the form, the office won’t accept it. |
| If you don’t sign the form, the office won’t accept it. | Mismo contrato, otra forma. |
| Unless it rains, the match goes ahead. | El partido sigue si no llueve. |
| Wrong: Unless you don’t sign… | Doble negativo: la condición se invierte. |
“Unless the gate opens, we can’t enter” means
Which sentence gives advice rather than a prediction?
Choosing might instead of will tells the listener that
One word: the office opens before five, we’ll have to go back tomorrow.

5. Vocabulario de condiciones
| Condición | Resultado típico |
|---|---|
| if it rains | we’ll move the visit inside |
| if the bus is late | we’ll miss the opening |
| if you sign today | the office keeps your place |
| if you pay in cash | there’s a small discount |
| if you arrive late | the guard checks your ID |
| if you feel sick | tell the teacher at once |
| if you lose the key | you’ll pay for a new one |
| if the museum is closed | we’ll go to the workshop |
| if you pass the test | you get the certificate |
| if you need help | ask at the front desk |
| if the weather is clear | we’ll eat in the plaza |
| if you forget your form | you can’t board |
Match each condition with the clause that fits
|---|---|---|---|
| L5 | vas tarde | instrucción a tu compañero | imperativo |
| L6 | el autobús cancela | renegociar el gasto | unless |
Notice: Laboratory rules have not changed. If a student touches a hot burner, the teacher stops the activity and writes a report. If the power fails, the freezer keeps the samples cold for four hours, but you must not open it. If you need the scale after class, ask at the front desk and someone will help you. About Saturday: unless the office receives the signed forms before five today, we cannot book the second bus. If the group is smaller than twelve, we’ll pay a higher price per student, so please sign on time. If you have already paid, keep the receipt: without it, the driver won’t let you board.
— Aviso del plantel
How many of the six conditions are general rules rather than one-off possibilities?
“If the power fails, the freezer keeps the samples cold” is zero because
Which deadline actually conditions the second bus?
“Without it, the driver won’t let you board” rewrites as
The notice implies that paying a higher price per student depends on
8. Speaking y writing
| Criterio | 3 puntos | 2 puntos | 1 punto |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forma | Sin will tras if, tiempos acordes | Un desliz | Will en la condición |
| Probabilidad | Will, might o should según el caso | Siempre will | Sin criterio |
Model: Our lab has four rules. If you touch anything without gloves, the teacher stops you. If the burner is on, the sign lights up. If you break glass, tell me first and don’t move. And if you finish early, you can wash the beakers. About the trip: unless we collect the money today, we lose the discount, and if we lose the discount, we might cancel the museum.
— Modelo oral: reglas y condiciones
9. Errores frecuentes
|---|---|---|
| If it will rain, we stay | will calcado en la condición | If it rains, we’ll stay |
| If it rains, we stay will | will movido al final | If it rains, we’ll stay |
| Unless you don’t sign | doble negativo | Unless you sign |
| If you will help me, I help you | will en ambas | If you help me, I’ll help you |
| We’ll go, if the bus comes | coma innecesaria | We’ll go if the bus comes |
| If you heat water, it will boils | mezcla las dos condicionales | If you heat water, it boils |
| If she come, tell me | tercera persona sin ese | If she comes, tell me |
| If you was late | was por were o presente | If you are late |
| Do not enter if the light is red not | negación suelta | If the light is red, do not enter |
| I’ll tell you if I will know | will otra vez | I’ll tell you if I know |
“If you heat ice, it will melt” is the standard zero conditional.
In “We’ll call you if the bus leaves early”, the comma is unnecessary.
Correct the shape: If the office (open) before five, we’ll go back today.
Choose the correct sentence.
“If the alarm sounds, leave the room” uses
