1. Can-do statements
- al terminar puedes comparar dos o tres opciones y justificar cuál te conviene más.
- Compare two options: The morning course is cheaper than the evening one.
- Say what is the most extreme in a group: This is the busiest street in our town.
- Express equality: My phone is as old as yours.
- Measure the difference: It’s a bit colder today, but much cheaper.
- Defend a choice with three comparisons.
2. Los datos: tres cursos de inglés del plantel
Un grupo de alumnos elige curso extra. Estos son los datos, inventados pero plausibles. primero identifica qué dos cosas se comparan y luego cuánto difieren.
| Course | Price per month | Hours | Class size | Distance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Morning club | 850 pesos | three hours | eight students | ten minutes from home |
| Afternoon online | 500 pesos | two hours | twenty students | no travel |
| Saturday intensive | 1 200 pesos | five hours | twelve students | thirty-five minutes by bus |
| Comparación | Frase en inglés | Qué agrega |
|---|---|---|
| Precio | The online course is cheaper than the morning club. | Diferencia simple |
| Precio medido | It is 350 pesos cheaper than the morning club. | Magnitud exacta |
| Duración | Saturday is the longest course of the three. | Superlativo con grupo |
| Igualdad | The morning club is as expensive as the intensive one next term. | As as |
| Grado | The online course is far more flexible but a bit less personal. | Modificadores |
| Cambio | More and more students are choosing online classes. | Comparativo duplicado |
3. La forma: tres rutas y cinco excepciones
los adjetivos de una sílaba agregan -er y -est, y los de dos sílabas terminados en y cambian a -ier y -iest. con tres sílabas o más se usa more y the most, sin tocar el adjetivo. cinco comparativos irregulares no aceptan more: good, bad, far, little y much. la comparación entre dos pide than; el superlativo pide the y un grupo.
| Tipo | Comparativo | Superlativo | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Una sílaba | taller, older, faster | the tallest, the oldest | Tom is taller than Ben. |
| Dos sílabas en y | happier, easier, noisier | the happiest | This test is easier than the last one. |
| Dos sílabas terminado en -er o -le | cleverer, simpler | the cleverest | It’s simpler than it looks. |
| Tres sílabas o más | more expensive, more reliable | the most expensive | Ours is the most expensive option. |
| Dos palabras | more well paid | the most well paid | Teaching is not the most well paid job. |
| Adjective | Comparative | Superlative |
|---|---|---|
| good, well | better | the best |
| bad, badly | worse | the worst |
| far | farther, further | the farthest |
| little | less | the least |
| much, many | more | the most |
| early | earlier | the earliest |
Choose: This exercise is ___ than the last one.
Choose: That was ___ film I have ever seen.
Choose: My results were ___ than my brother’s.
Choose: This phone costs ___ money than the other one.
“More better” is acceptable in standard English.
“The most least useful” repeats a superlative marker incorrectly.
Complete: Winter is (cold) season of the year.
Complete: My bag is heavy yours.
4. Than, as as, the least y one of the
la igualdad se dice con as plus adjective plus as: as tall as my brother. el superlativo necesita un grupo explícito: the busiest street in our town. one of the plus superlativo se usa con sustantivo plural: one of the best schools in Mexico. the least es el superlativo inverso y funciona con adjetivos largos.
| Armazón | Estructura | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| Comparación | comparative + than | Older than my cousin. |
| Igualdad | as + adjective + as | As tall as my teacher. |
| Desigualdad | not as / not so + adjective + as | Not as crowded as the market. |
| Grupo | the + superlative + in / of | The tallest of the three. |
| Parte de un grupo | one of the + superlative + plural noun | One of the best schools in the state. |
Choose: The library is not ___ busy ___ the cafeteria.
Choose: It is ___ street in the whole town.
“One of the most interesting museums in the city” means
Choose: This is ___ useful app for me.
Complete: Our team is one of the (good) in the state.
5. ¿En cuánto? Los modificadores de diferencia
el grado de diferencia se expresa con words después de than: a bit older, much cheaper, far better. con números se dice three times as expensive as y twice as big as. una comparación sin medida es una opinión: agrega a bit, much o three times.
| Modificador | Qué indica | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| a bit, a little | diferencia pequeña | It’s a bit cheaper. |
| slightly | formal y pequeña | Slightly longer. |
| much, a lot, far | diferencia grande | Much faster than the bus. |
| way | muy informal, grande | Way better than last year. |
| times as as | proporción numérica | Three times as expensive as the club. |
| twice | el doble | Twice as big as our classroom. |
Choose: The new road is ___ than the old one.
Saying “a bit more expensive” instead of “more expensive” helps you
“Twice as long as” means
“Very better” is a correct combination.
Sort the twelve adjectives by the way they form the comparative
Arrastra cada ficha a su categoría (o tócala y luego toca la categoría). También puedes usar el teclado.
6. Dos estructuras que dan nivel
la forma comparativo más comparativo expresa cambio progresivo: colder and colder. the plus comparativo, the plus comparativo expresa proporción: the more you practise, the better you get.
| Patrón | Ejemplo | Para qué sirve |
|---|---|---|
| Comparative and comparative | The lessons got longer and longer. | Cambio progresivo |
| The comp, the comp | The more you speak, the better you get. | Proporción |
| Less and less | Fewer and fewer students walk to school. | Disminución con conteo |
| Possessive plus comparativo | My result was better than hers. | Comparar posesiones |

|---|---|---|---|
| C1 | ¿Precio? | El online: it is cheaper than the club | Comparar con than |

| Criterio | 3 puntos | 2 puntos | 1 punto |
|---|---|---|---|
| Formas | Corta, larga e irregular correctas | Un error de forma | Doble marca |
| Grado | Modificador de diferencia presente | Implicito | Ausente |
| Superlativo | Grupo explícito | Grupo vago | Sin grupo |
| Decisión | Elige y justifica con tres datos | Elige sin datos | No elige |
| Fluidez | Cuarenta segundos sin leer | Dos pausas | Lee |
Model: I chose the morning club. It is more expensive than the online course, but it is much more personal: eight students instead of twenty. The classes are shorter than the Saturday ones, and I think the club is the best option for me because I cannot travel thirty-five minutes before work.
