1. Arranque: tres cambios simultáneos

Ana said: "I am in the lab now." Two minutes later you tell Luis: reported speech moves somebody else’s words into your sentence, and the verb steps one tense back. The interview notes of the lab case record four testimonies given on 25 September about events on 22 September. Your sentence has to change three things at once: the verb, the pronoun and the time word. Check a report with three shifts at once: tense, pronoun and time word.

2. El retroceso: siete tiempos en una tabla

Retroceso de tiempos con un mismo sujeto
DirectoReportadoQué cambió
I write a reportShe said she wrote a reportPresent simple to past simple
I am writing a reportShe said she was writing a reportPresent continuous to past continuous
I have written a reportShe said she had written a reportPresent perfect to past perfect
I wrote a reportShe said she had written a reportPast simple to past perfect
I had written a reportShe said she had written a reportPast perfect does not move
I will write a reportShe said she would write a reportWill becomes would
I can write a reportShe said she could write a reportCan becomes could
I must write a reportShe said she had to write a reportMust becomes had to
I must have written itShe said she must have written itModal perfect does not move

Las dos filas que no se mueven son las que más confunden y las que menos errores dan: present becomes past, past becomes past perfect, and will becomes would when the report is in the past. Y reported past perfect uses the same irregular participles again: had been, had gone, had written.

Report this: Ana said, "I have finished the register."

Which report keeps the correct form of must?

A past perfect in direct speech stays unchanged when the report verb is in the past.

Complete the backshift: "I will check the window" becomes He said he check the window and "I can help" becomes he said he help.

DirectoReportadoEjemplo
todaythat dayShe said she was busy that day
tomorrowthe next dayHe said he would come the next day
yesterdaythe day beforeShe said she had signed the day before
last weekthe week beforeHe said he had trained the week before
next monththe following monthShe said she would travel the following month
nowthen / at that momentHe said he was busy then
herethereShe said she had been there
thisthatHe said that key was his
agobeforeShe said she had left two minutes before

Pronouns and possessives change to match who is talking, and that shift is not optional. "My brother saw me" dicho por Ana y reportado por ti se vuelve "her brother had seen her".

Report: Luis said, "My uncle saw me at six."

Why does "she said she is in the lab today" sound wrong to most teachers?

"Tomorrow" becomes "the following day" or "the next day" in reported speech.

Shift the markers: "I arrived here yesterday" becomes he said he had arrived the day .

4. Say contra tell: una diferencia de estructura

No es un sinónimo perfecto: say takes no personal object and tell always does, so she said to me is wrong and she told me is right.

say plus clauseyesShe said she was busy
say to somebodyyesShe said to me that she was busy
say somebodynowrong: she said me
tell somebodyyesShe told me she was busy
tell plus clause without personnowrong: she told that
tell plus nounyesShe told the truth, she told a story
ask plus somebodyyesShe asked me a question

Hay un segundo detalle que se olvida: cuando la persona va antes, el that es opcional; cuando va después de say to, el that suele necesitarse. A good report gives the testimony, the verb of reporting and the time shift, and never mixes two versions. Y en la práctica periodística, in real news texts about half of the reported clauses use say or tell and the rest use specific verbs.

Which sentence is correct?

Which pattern is NOT valid in English?

A reported question loses the question mark and keeps statement word order, with no do or did. Compara: "Where were you at 6:40?" becomes "The teacher asked Luis where he had been at 6:40."

Wh questionWhere were you?She asked where I had beenWord order becomes statement
Yes or noDid you see the door? She asked if I had seen the doorif or whether appears
Modal questionCan I use your key?He asked whether he could use my keyPronouns shift twice
OfferDo you want a copy? She asked if I wanted a copyPresent becomes past
Question with mustMust I sign now?He asked whether he had to sign thenMust becomes had to

Una trampa de orden: yes and no questions are reported with if or whether, and wh questions keep their question word. Por eso "she asked where was I" es incorrecto aunque la pregunta original lo fuera: en el reporte la oración se afirma, no se pregunta.

Report the question: "Did you lock the lab?"

Why is there no question mark in "The cleaner asked where the projector was"?

In reported questions, the subject comes before the verb.

Report both questions: "Where were you?" became she asked me where I and "Have you seen it?" became she asked I had seen it.

6. Órdenes, consejos y promesas

Las órdenes no usan that: usan un infinitivo. Commands are reported with told somebody to or asked somebody not to, never with that clauses. Y el negativo pone not antes del to, no después.

Patrones con verbos de reporte específicos
VerboPatrónEjemplo reportadoActitud
telltold somebody toShe told me to sign the registerauthority
askasked somebody toHe asked me to open the windowrequest
warnwarned somebody not toThey warned us not to enter after ninedanger
adviseadvised somebody toShe advised me to check the logadvice
promisepromised toHe promised to return the keycommitment
admitadmitted plus ing or thatShe admitted taking the keyconfession
denydenied plus ing or thatHe denied being in the labrefusal
suggestsuggested plus ing or thatShe suggested asking the cleaneroption
insistinsisted on plus ingHe insisted on signing firstpressure
blameblamed somebody forShe blamed Luis for leaving it openaccusation

El verbo suggest trae la caída más frecuente: reporting verbs carry attitude: admitted, denied, promised, warned, suggested, and each has its own pattern. No digas "she suggested me to go", di "she suggested going" o "she suggested that I go".

Report the order: "Don’t touch the door," the technician said to us.

Which sentence reports a refusal of the accusation?

Choose the correct pattern:

Match each testimony to the reporting verb that fits

When the reported fact is still true now, English allows the tense to stay where it is.

She said the lab is on the second floorStill true at the moment of reportingRetroceder no es obligatorio
He said he has two keysHe probably still has themhad two keys also possible
The notice says the room must be vacatedsays is a present reporting verbNo backshift after present
She said she was born in 2009A permanent factPast simple already fixed
He said he had been illHe recovered, so retroceso correctoKeep the shift to mark the end

Pero ojo con el cuarto renglón: when the reported fact is still true now, English allows the tense to stay where it is no autoriza a dejar el verbo en presente cuando la situación ya cambió. Si Luis ya devolvió la llave, "he said he has two keys" traiciona el dato, y en un reporte eso vale cero. Check a report with three shifts at once: tense, pronoun and time word.

Which report may legitimately keep the present?

Luis returned the key last week. Which report is faithful?

A reporting verb in the present, like says, does not trigger backshift.

      8. Simulación: conversor de directo a indirecto

Simulación con los cuatro testimonios del caso. The interview notes of the lab case record four testimonies given on 25 September about events on 22 September.

      Conversor: directo, indirecto y operaciones
      Testimonio directoVersión reportadaOperaciones
Ana: I am in the lab at 6:40Ana said she was in the lab at 6:40Present to past, I to she
Luis: I have signed the registerLuis said he had signed the registerPerfect to past perfect
Rocío: Did you see the projector?Rocío asked whether I had seen the projectorQuestion to if clause
Technician: Do not open that windowThe technician told us not to open that windowOrder plus not to
Ana: My uncle will pick me up tomorrowAna said her uncle would pick her up the next dayWill to would, tomorrow shifts
Luis: I can help you tonightLuis said he could help me that nightCan to could, tonight shifts
Cleaner: I arrived here at sevenThe cleaner said she had arrived there at sevenPast to past perfect, here to there
Rocío: I must check the log nowRocío said she had to check the log thenMust to had to, now to then

Check a report with three shifts at once: tense, pronoun and time word.

Report: Ana said, "I must see the log tomorrow."

Which report of "I arrived here at seven" protects the evidence best?

Sort each broken report into the shift it is missing

Complete the report: Rocío asked I the projector and the technician told us open the window.

R: Where were you on the evening of 22 September? A: At the shop, with my uncle.Question and answerAlibi with a place
R: Do you have a key to the lab? A: I had one until 2023, but I returned it.Yes or no plus correctionKey history, past
R: Did you see anything unusual? A: The window was open when I passed at 6:30.Wh plus statementNew evidence
Reported: Rocío asked Ana where she had been on the evening of 22 September.Reported questionStatement order
Reported: Ana answered that she had been at the shop with her uncle.Reported answerThree shifts applied
Reported: She said she had had a key until 2023 and had returned it.Reported with past perfectSequence marked
Reported: She added that the window had been left open when she passed at 6:30.Passive inside reportUnits 2 combined
Reported: No conclusion was drawn until the other two testimonies had been taken.Passive plus past perfectFormal close

Fíjate en el renglón sexto: had had. A good report gives the testimony, the verb of reporting and the time shift, and never mixes two versions. Reported past perfect uses the same irregular participles again: had been, had gone, had written.

Why does the report use "had had"?

What new evidence did Ana add?

The report of Ana’s answer keeps the original time words unchanged.

From the report: Rocío asked where Ana on 22 September and Ana said she at the shop.

He denied to take the keyHe denied taking the keyInfinitivo tras denyDeny pide ing
They asked if had I seen itThey asked if I had seen itInversión tras ifDespués de if, orden normal

The typical error is to keep the original time word, so she said that she is here today stays broken.

Which correction fixes "He denied to take the key"?

A student writes "They asked if had I signed". The problem is:

Sort each sentence into correct or say-tell or order error

A report paragraph needs two say clauses, one tell clause, one question and one order. Paso 1, pregunta reportada: "Rocío asked Ana where she had been on the evening of 22 September." Paso 2, respuesta con dos retrocesos: "Ana answered that she had been at the shop with her uncle and that she had returned the key in 2023." Paso 3, orden o consejo con verbo específico: "The technician told us not to open the window." Paso 4, una negación: "Luis denied being near the lab at 6:40." Paso 5, cierre pasivo: "No conclusion was drawn until the other testimonies had been taken."

Why does the model use denied being instead of denied to be?

Convert the order: "Check the log," Rocío said to me becomes Rocío me the log.

In conversation you report with two moves: the claim and your own doubt about it.

      • Turn 1: I left the lab door open at ten past six.
      • Turn 2: He said he had left the lab door open at ten past six.
      • Turn 3: She reported that he had said that, and added: I saw him at the stairwell.
      • Turn 4: The technician asked whether we had checked the log.
      • Turn 5: Somebody told us not to enter the lab after nine.

Tu amigo dijo "I will call you": y hoy sigue sin llamar.
