1. Cómo se evalúa esta unidad
Esta evaluación no pide reglas sueltas: pide decidir. Before answering, ask the same three questions: is the time open, is there a count, is the verb a state. The passing band is sixteen of twenty-seven items, and the destacado band needs a paragraph with all four required forms.
| 2 | Duración: for, since y reloj | 8 a 14 | 7 | Aritmética del tiempo |
| 3 | Hábitos: used to, would y estados | 15 a 21 | 7 | Acción contra estado |
| 4 | Producción y decisión | 22 a 27 | 6 | Párrafo justificado |
A tense is not a translation of a feeling. It is a decisión about time.
2. El caso: three lives, one classroom
Daniela was born in 2009, Luis was born in 2008 and Rocío was born in 2010, and all three are talking in 2026.
| Persona | Dato | Cifra o fecha |
|---|---|---|
| Daniela | Born | 2009, so she is seventeen in 2026 |
| Daniela | Training for a 5K | Since 1 August 2026, fifty-five days ago |
| Daniela | Races finished | Three, the last one on 20 September |
| Daniela | Old habit | Played in the street until 2020 |
| Luis | Born | 2008, so he is eighteen in 2026 |
| Luis | Job at the shop | Since 2024, and he still works there |
| Luis | Waking up lately | At 5:40, class starts at 6:50 |
| Luis | Old habit | Walked to school until 2022 |
| Rocío | Born | 2010, so she is sixteen in 2026 |
| Rocío | English | Since 2018 |
| Rocío | Study session today | From 8:05 to 11:40 |
| Rocío | Pages read today | Sixteen |
| Rocío | Old state | Afraid of thunderstorms until 2023 |
| Rocío | Now | Getting used to sleeping alone |
Tres resúmenes del caso, uno por persona: Daniela has been training for a 5K since August and she has run three races; Luis has been working at his uncle’s shop since 2024 and he used to walk to school until 2022; Rocío has been learning English since 2018 and she used to be afraid of thunderstorms. In 2026 a person born in 2009 is seventeen, one born in 2008 is eighteen and one born in 2010 is sixteen. Segunda: "still works there" y "still doing" mantienen el marco abierto, así que el tiempo es perfecto; "until 2022" lo cierra y pide past simple. Tercera: Rocío "used to be afraid" es un estado terminado, y ahí used to es la única opción.
3. Bloque 1: elección de tiempo, reactivos 1 a 7
Bloque de decisión pura. An open time marker such as lately, since or for eight years requires a perfect form, never the present simple.
Reactivo 1. Daniela ___ for a 5K since 1 August.
Reactivo 2. She ___ the last race on 20 September.
Reactivo 3. Luis ___ at his uncle’s shop since 2024.
Reactivo 4. He ___ to school until his family moved in 2022.
Reactivo 5. "Daniela has run three races" is correct because the sentence counts what the activity produced.
Reactivo 6. "Luis has been waking up at five forty lately" is acceptable even though he does it every day.
Reactivo 7. Complete: Rocío English since 2018.
4. Bloque 2: duración y cuentas, reactivos 8 a 14
In 2026 a person born in 2009 is seventeen, one born in 2008 is eighteen and one born in 2010 is sixteen.
|---|---|---|
| Reactivo 8. Rocío has been learning English since 2018, so she has been learning it for ___ years | 2026 menos 2018 | eight |
| Reactivo 9. Daniela was born in 2009, so she is ___ in 2026 | 2026 menos 2009 | seventeen |
| Reactivo 10. Luis was born in 2008, so he is ___ and he started the shop job at age ___ | 2026 menos 2008; 2024 menos 2008 | eighteen, sixteen |
| Reactivo 11. Daniela has been training since 1 August and today is 25 September: that is ___ days | 31 días de agosto más 25 | fifty-five |
Reactivo 12. Rocío studied from 8:05 to 11:40. Choose the correct report:
Reactivo 13. Luis wakes up at 5:40 and class starts at 6:50. Choose the correct sentence:
Reactivo 14. Complete with for or since: Daniela has been training August and she has trained fifty-five days.
5. Bloque 3: hábitos, acciones y estados, reactivos 15 a 21
Bloque contra la trampa del estado. Know, be, have as possession, like and live are states, so they never appear with ing.
Reactivo 15. Which sentence is correct?
Reactivo 16. Choose the correct question:
Reactivo 17. Every Sunday at the shop, Luis and his uncle ___ the same radio programme.
Reactivo 18. Why can’t you say "Luis would have a small desk at the shop"?
Reactivo 19. Sort each sentence into correct, wrong with the s or wrong with a state
Reactivo 20. Match each sentence to the reason it is correct
Reactivo 21. Correct the state verb: "Rocío has been knowing the answer" becomes "Rocío the answer."
6. Bloque 4: producción y decisión, reactivos 22 a 27
El bloque cuatro pide escribir y justificar. The paragraph is only valid if the two tenses alternate and the habit with used to has really ended. Los seis reactivos siguientes se contestan sobre tu propio borrador de "Then and now", de ochenta a ciento veinte palabras.
Reactivo 22. Your paragraph says "I used to play football every Friday" and you still play on Fridays. What must you change?
Reactivo 23. Which sentence belongs to the counted-result slot of the paragraph?
Reactivo 24. A classmate writes "I have lived here since five years". The correct diagnosis is:
Reactivo 25. Which feedback is most useful for "My grandmother would have a big kitchen"?
Reactivo 26. For the oral part you must include one used to, one continuous form and one counted result in two minutes.
Reactivo 27. In the interview, the correct short answer to "Have you been sleeping well?" is:
The paragraph is only valid if the two tenses alternate and the habit with used to has really ended.
|---|---|---|
| Lately I have been waking up at five forty | Present perfect continuous | Open period with lately, activity continues |
| I have been doing it for three weeks | Continuous with for | Length measured up to now |
| I used to sleep until seven | Used to | The habit ended, so the contrast is real |
| My brother would knock on the door to wake me | Would | Repeated action, nostalgic tone, no state |
| Since August I have run nine kilometres twice | Counted result in the simple form | A number moves the sentence out of the continuous |
| Now I am used to the early alarm | Be used to plus ing | A present adaptation, not an ended habit |
| I have known my running partner for eight years | State verb in the simple form | know never takes ing |
| Last Saturday we ran the park loop at seven | Past simple | A date closes the frame |
Why does the model put "I have run nine kilometres twice" in the simple form?
Rewrite the broken sentence: "My brother would be shy" becomes "My brother shy."
Before answering, ask the same three questions: is the time open, is there a count, is the verb a state.
|---|---|---|
| I have lived here since five years | I have lived here for five years | since needs a point |
| I am living here since 2019 | I have been living here since 2019 | duration up to now needs have been |
| She has been writing five letters | She has written five letters | count moves to the simple form |
| Did you used to train in the morning? | Did you use to train in the morning? | no s after did |
| We would have a red bike | We used to have a red bike | possession is a state |
| I have been knowing Ana since 2015 | I have known Ana since 2015 | know is a state |
| He has been sleeping three hours lately | He has slept three hours tonight | a number of hours is a result |
| They used to went to the creek | They used to go to the creek | base verb after used to |
The most expensive exam error is writing I have lived here since five years, because it breaks the since rule twice.
A peer reviewer must decide whether the tense choice is justified, not whether the spelling looks fine.
|---|---|---|---|
| I have lived here since five years | I have lived here for five years | Since y for se confunden | ¿Punto o cantidad? |
| She has been knowing the answer | She has known the answer | Estado en continuo | ¿Se repite a propósito? |
| Did he used to swim? | Did he use to swim? | Doble marca con did | Tras did va use |
| We would have a small desk | We used to have a small desk | Would con posesión | Cambia a used to |
| I used to play, and I still play | I play, and I used to play too | Contradicción lógica | Si sigue, no es used to |
| He has been working two hours ago | He worked two hours ago | Ago con perfecto | Ago cierra el marco |
| She is used to wake up early | She is used to waking up early | Mezcla de estructuras | Be used to pide ing |
| I have been study since eight | I have been studying since eight | Falta la forma en ing | Tres piezas obligatorias |
| They used to went there | They used to go there | Pasado tras to | Tras used to va la base |
| Rocío has been reading sixteen pages | Rocío has read sixteen pages | Conteo en continuo | Si cuentas, usa el simple |
The most expensive exam error is writing I have lived here since five years, because it breaks the since rule twice.

A student writes a perfect paragraph but does not record the two minutes. What is the ceiling?
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0:00 a 0:22 | Tres siluetas frente a un pizarrón con los años 2008, 2009 y 2010 | Three students, three birth years, one classroom in 2026. | the case |
| 2 | 0:22 a 0:54 | Un calendario que va del 1 de agosto al 25 de septiembre | Fifty-five days of training: since is the door, for is the corridor. | since and for |
| 3 | 0:54 a 1:26 | Un reloj de manecillas en 8:05 que gira hasta 11:40 | Three hours and thirty-five minutes. The exam is arithmetic before it is grammar. | clock work |

| 6 | 2:30 a 3:02 | Una s que se cae de used to cuando aparece did | After did, the s disappears. Same rule in the question and the negative. | didn’t use to |
| 7 | 3:02 a 3:34 | Un párrafo a mano con cuatro renglones marcados en colores | Open activity, old habit, counted result, present contrast. | four required forms |
| 8 | 3:34 a 4:06 | Dos compañeros intercambiando hojas con una lista de chequeo | Peer review asks one thing: can you justify each form you wrote? | co-evaluation |
13. Rúbrica del desempeño escrito y oral
| Criterio | Aún no cumple | Suficiente | Bueno | Destacado |
|---|---|---|---|---|
In this rubric, which evidence belongs to the Destacado level of the tense choice?
The oral part is two minutes and must include one used to, one continuous and one counted result.
15. Resumen de la unidad
an open time marker such as lately, since or for eight years requires a perfect form, never the present simple. When the sentence names a finished year the verb goes back to the past simple. The continuous needs three pieces: have or has, been, and the ing form. The moment you count what the activity produced, the simple form takes over from the continuous. Visible evidence in the present is what makes the continuous the natural choice. know, be, have as possession, like and live are states, so they never appear with ing. Since takes a starting point and for takes a length, and swapping them is the cheapest error on this exam. From 8:05 to 11:40 is three hours and thirty-five minutes, and from 5:40 to 6:50 is one hour and ten minutes. From August 1 to September 25 is fifty-five days, which is about eight weeks. Used to describes a habit or state that has ended, and the s disappears after did. Would repeats actions but cannot carry states, so we would visit is fine and we would be shy is not. in the interview the short answer keeps the auxiliary: Yes, I have, No, I haven’t, Yes, I did. The paragraph is only valid if the two tenses alternate and the habit with used to has really ended. A peer reviewer must decide whether the tense choice is justified, not whether the spelling looks fine. The most expensive exam error is writing I have lived here since five years, because it breaks the since rule twice. The passing band is sixteen of twenty-seven items, and the destacado band needs a paragraph with all four required forms. Before answering, ask the same three questions: is the time open, is there a count, is the verb a state.

18. Fuentes y continuidad
