The third conditional talks about a finished past that cannot change and imagines a different result: if I had studied, I would have passed. The third conditional is always about something impossible now: the past is closed and only the imagination is open. The three conditionals form a timeline: first for the open future, second for the unlikely present, third for the closed past. The third conditional reverses a real past fact, so you state the fact first and then imagine the opposite.

2. La forma: if plus past perfect, would have plus participle

The pattern is if plus past perfect and would have plus past participle, and both halves stay in the past. En la condición usas past perfect (had más participio) y en el resultado would have más participio. Every verb in the result takes the past participle after have, so irregulars like known, taken and bought decide the score.

El third conditional en las seis personas
PersonaCondición (if past perfect)Resultado (would have participle)
IIf I had studiedI would have passed
youIf you had hurriedyou would have caught the bus
he / sheIf she had left earliershe would have arrived on time
weIf we had checkedwe would have seen the error
theyIf they had invited methey would have had more people
any person, negativeIf he had not missed the bushe would not have been late

Which sentence follows the third conditional pattern?

Choose the correct result clause:

In the third conditional, both the if clause and the result clause refer to the past.

Complete: "If they had invited me, I (go) to the party."

The three conditionals form a timeline: first for the open future, second for the unlikely present, third for the closed past. Check a third conditional with one question: did this really happen, and am I now imagining the opposite.

Comparación de los tres condicionales
TipoTiempo de la condiciónFormaEjemplo
Firstfuturo abiertoif + presente, will + baseIf it rains, I will stay
Secondpresente irrealif + past, would + baseIf I had money, I would travel
Thirdpasado cerradoif + past perfect, would have + participleIf I had saved, I would have travelled
Mixto 1pasado con hoyif + past perfect, would + base nowIf I had taken it, I would live there now
Mixto 2rasgo con ayerif + past, would have + participleIf I were tall, I would have joined

Sort each sentence by conditional type

Which pair shows the same real event re-framed from open to closed?

4. Could have y might have: la alternativa no era segura

Could have and might have replace would have when the alternate past is an ability or a chance, not a certainty. Could have dice que habrías podido; might have dice que tal vez habrías; would have afirma que habrías. El grado importa tanto como la forma.

Grados de la alternativa pasada
FormaQué afirma del pasadoEjemplo
would have + participleresultado casi seguroIf I had studied, I would have passed
could have + participlehabría sido posibleIf I had trained, I could have won
might have + participlequizá habría ocurridoIf we had left early, we might have seen it
would not have + participlehabríamos evitado el desastreIf you had warned me, I would not have gone

Aquí vuelve el caso de la Unidad 2. If the latch had been fixed in September, the projector would not have disappeared in October. Fíjate: la condición está en pasiva (had been fixed) y el resultado en would have, porque todo el renglón ya cerró.

Choose the form that only says it was possible, not certain:

"If she had asked, she might have got help" claims a certain result.

Complete: "If we had left at six, we (see) the accident."

5. Should have: la crítica que no necesita if

No todo arrepentimiento necesita las dos cláusulas. Should have plus participle is not a conditional but the easiest way to criticise a past choice. Should have más participio es la forma más corta de decir "debiste": I should have studied, you should have told me. Suena a consejo tardío y a reproche suave.

Should have, had better y wish para mirar el pasado
EstructuraQué haceEjemplo
should have + participlecriticar o autocriticarI should have left earlier
should not have + participlearrepentirse de algo hechoYou should not have said that
I wish + past perfectdesear un pasado distintoI wish I had studied English sooner
if only + past perfectlamento enfáticoIf only I had listened

What does "You should have called me" mean?

Rewrite the regret with wish: "I did not study, and I failed." Best option:

"I should have went" is a correct should have form.

Yesterday, last year and in 2024 lock the third conditional, because the time is finished. Hoy es 2026, así que "last year" es 2025 y "in September" de este año todavía no cierra. Convierte cada hecho en su opuesto imaginado.

Hecho real, marca cerrada y alternativa con third conditional
Hecho real (pasado)Marca cerradaOpuesto imaginadoOración
The meeting started at 8:40last Mondaywe lost 40 minutesIf the meeting had started at eight, we would have had forty more minutes
Luis missed the 7:05 busin the morninghe arrived at 8:20If Luis had caught the 7:05 bus, he would not have arrived late
She did not save in 2024in 2024she cannot pay nowIf she had saved in 2024, she would not be stuck now
They cancelled the triplast Augustnobody saw the coastIf they had not cancelled, we would have seen the coast
I forgot the chargeron Fridaymy phone died at twoIf I had brought my charger, my phone would not have died

Las cuentas van dentro del resultado. "would have had forty more minutes" y "my phone would not have died" cierran un hecho y abren su contrario. Check a third conditional with one question: did this really happen, and am I now imagining the opposite.

The meeting ran 8:40 to 11:40 but should have run 8:00 to 11:40. Choose the honest regret:

Why does "If she had saved in 2024, she would not be stuck now" switch to would be?

"Last year" in 2026 refers to 2025.

Complete: "If Luis had caught the 7:05 bus, he (arrive) late."

7. Banco de arrepentimientos para hablar

Un arrepentimiento bien dicho tiene tres golpes. To share a regret you name the fact, the wish and the consequence in three moves. Primero el hecho, luego el wish con if I had, y al final la consecuencia real. Aquí tienes el banco listo. The ready chunks are fixed: if I had known, I would have come, I should have studied, I could have won.

What is your biggest school regret?I skipped first classI skipped first class in September. If I had gone, I would not have failed the test, and now I would not be retaking it.
What would you tell your past self?I did not practiseI wish I had practised English daily. If I had, I would understand this lesson without a dictionary.
A purchase you regret?I bought a cheap phoneI bought a cheap phone last year. If I had spent a little more, it would not have broken in six months.
A missed invitation?I stayed homeI stayed home that night. If I had gone, I might have met my best friend.
Something you should have said?I stayed silentI should have said something. If I had spoken up, the group would not have decided alone.

A three-move regret answer needs which order?

Match each regret to the structure it uses

In fast speech if I had had sounds like if I ada had, which is why learners miss the second had. "If I had had more time" se oye como "if I ada had more time", y por eso muchos creen que sólo hay un had.

The top error is would have inside the if clause: if I would have known is wrong and if I had known is right. Y detrás viene el de participio. Learners drop the participle after have and say would have went instead of would have gone. Si dominas "tras if, past perfect" y "tras have, participio", el resto es orden de cláusulas. The if clause can close the sentence, and then the comma disappears: I would have called if I had known.

      10. Lectura: un diario retrospectivo

Un párrafo retrospectivo acumula third conditional. In a real text a retrospective paragraph stacks third conditionals to explain how a result came about.

The sentence "I could have kept up" suggests that:

Paulina is describing a past that she believes she can still change now.

      11. Práctica guiada: el párrafo de arrepentimiento resuelto

Vas a escribir un párrafo retrospectivo. A regrets paragraph needs one real fact, two third conditionals and one should have, joined by time markers.

"I missed the registration deadline on August 1."
      • Paso 2: reescribe con un third conditional. "If I had registered on time, I would not be paying a late fee."
      • Paso 3: añade una alternativa con could have o might have. "If a friend had reminded me, I could have made it."
      • Paso 4: agrégate una crítica con should have. "I should have checked the calendar."
      • Paso 5: cierra con el hecho en presente. "But I did not, so now I am paying the fee."

Complete step 2: "If I had registered on time, I be paying a late ."

The classroom goal is to relive a finished event out loud with the correct had and participle.

      • Turn 1: I missed the bus on Monday.
      • Turn 2: If you had left five minutes earlier, you would have caught it. (third)
      • Turn 3: If I had caught it, I would not have been late to class. (third)
      • Turn 4: If I had not been late, the teacher might not have marked me absent. (might have)
      • Turn 5: I should have set an alarm. (should have)
      • Turn 6: But I missed the bus, so here I am on time today.
      • Regla: si un compañero pone would dentro del if o pierde el participio tras have, el grupo para y corrige.

      2. Varias salidas del callejon

Además de would have, puedes graduar el lamento: could have me dice que habia alternativa, might have que era posible sin certeza. Y un alerta de ortografía auditiva: la contraccion escrita es would've, jamas "would of". Piensa en un examen, un viaje o una conversacion: completa la frase If I had..., I would have... y di que cambiarías en tu vida real?
