Comparatives and superlatives

To compare TWO things use the comparative (bigger, more expensive). To single out ONE in a group use the superlative (the biggest, the most expensive).

  • Short adjective (one syllable): add -er / -est: tall -> taller -> the tallest.
  • Long adjective (two or more syllables): use more / the most: modern -> more modern -> the most modern.
  • Ending in -y: change y to i: happy -> happier -> the happiest.

Irregulars you must know

good -> better -> the best; bad -> worse -> the worst; far -> further -> the furthest.

Worked example

  1. Monterrey is ___ than Merida (hot). Two cities compared -> comparative: hotter.
  2. This is ___ restaurant in town (good). One in a group -> superlative: the best.

Practice with feedback

An elephant is ___ than a dog.

That was ___ film of the year.

More beautiful is the correct comparative of beautiful.

Niagara Falls are (famous) place I have visited.

Common errors

  • Double comparing: more bigger (use only one tool).
  • Forgetting the before a superlative: it is biggest (it is the biggest).
  • Adding -er to long adjectives: beautifulest.

Why this matters

Reviews, rankings, travel blogs and exams are full of comparison. Getting the rule of length right makes you sound accurate.
