Past simple, past continuous and “used to”
To tell a story you move between completed actions (Past Simple), actions in progress (Past Continuous) and past habits (“used to”).
When to use each
- Past Simple: “I woke up and checked my phone.” (sequence).
- Past Continuous: “I was walking when it started to rain.” (background).
- Used to: “I used to be shy.” (past habit, now over).
