CAPÍTULO 1
Hello! My name is… (¡Hola! Me llamo…)
Learning a new language starts with a very small magic: saying who you are. In English, the friendliest way to begin is «Hello! My name is Ana.» or «Hi! I am Ana.» Today you will read a short text, meet the words, and practice introducing yourself. Don't worry about being perfect — worrying is for later; speaking is for now.
The first words
Look at these sentences and read them out loud:
Hello! My name is Leo. → ¡Hola! Me llamo Leo. Hi! I am Maya. → ¡Hola! Soy Maya. What is your name? → ¿Cómo te llamas? Nice to meet you! → ¡Mucho gusto!
«Hello» and «Hi» both mean «hola»; «Hi» is more casual, like with a friend. To answer «What is your name?» you can say «My name is…» or «I am…». Both are correct.
Saying hello and goodbye
A conversation has a beginning and an end. Besides «Hello», you can greet with «Good morning» (por la mañana), «Good afternoon» (después del mediodía) and «Good evening» (por la tarde-noche). When you leave, you say «Goodbye» or «Bye», and «See you tomorrow!» (¡Nos vemos mañana!). Small words, big connections.
Be polite: please and thank you
Two words open every door in English: «please» (por favor) and «thank you» (gracias). If someone helps you, say «Thank you!». If you want something, add «please»: «Water, please.» When someone thanks you, answer «You're welcome!» (¡de nada!). Kindness sounds good in every language.
Your turn
Close the book and introduce yourself in English, out loud: «Hi! My name is… Nice to meet you!» Then say goodbye: «Bye! See you tomorrow!» Do this five times this week, and these words will stop being foreign and start being yours.
