CAPÍTULO 1

Colors all around me (Colores a mi alrededor)

The world is full of color, and naming colors is one of the easiest and most fun ways to start speaking English. Look around you right now: what color is the wall? What color are your shoes? In this reading you will learn the color words and how to use them in short sentences.

The colors

Read and repeat:

red → rojo blue → azul green → verde yellow → amarillo orange → naranja purple → morado, violeta black → negro white → blanco pink → rosa brown → café, marrón

Tip: «orange» is both a color and a fruit (la naranja). Same word, two meanings!

Using the colors

To say the color of one thing, use «is»: «The sky is blue.» For more than one thing, use «are»: «The leaves are green.» Notice how the color word goes at the end: «is blue», «are green».

The sun is yellow. → El sol es amarillo. The cat is black. → El gato es negro. My eyes are brown. → Mis ojos son cafés.

My favorite color

One of the first questions to learn is «What is your favorite color?» (¿Cuál es tu color favorito?). You answer: «My favorite color is green.» or simply «I like blue.» Everyone's favorite is different, and that's what makes conversations interesting.

A color hunt

Now a game. Look around the room and find one thing for each color you know: «a red bag, a blue book, a green pen…» Say each sentence out loud: «The book is blue.» Do this every day this week, and the colors will come to your mouth without thinking. Learning a language is that simple: small steps, every day.
